The Story of Bitcoin Pizza Day
On May 22, 2010, programmer Laszlo Hanyecz made history by completing the first known commercial Bitcoin transaction — paying 10,000 BTC for two large Papa John's pizzas arranged through the Bitcointalk forum. The pizzas cost approximately 1, making each Bitcoin worth about /bin/sh.0041 at the time.
At Bitcoin's all-time high of ~3,000 in March 2024, those 10,000 BTC would have been worth approximately 30 million. May 22nd is now celebrated annually as Bitcoin Pizza Day — a celebration of Bitcoin's first real-world commercial use and a reminder of how far the asset has come.
Laszlo has stated publicly that he does not regret the transaction: "I think it's great that I got to be a part of that early history of Bitcoin." He was proud to demonstrate its real-world utility when most people saw it purely as an experiment.
